A Kalihi woman allegedly burned her children with a clothes iron because "they didn't go to sleep" when they were supposed to, a prosecutor said in court this afternoon.

Ionerina Baelo, 29, was indicted today on assault charges for allegedly burning her 6-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son with an iron.

A physician who treated the children said the injuries could result in "permanent serious disfigurement," Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Vickie Kapp said in court.

Kapp told Circuit Judge Derrick Chan that Baelo's daughter had burns on her leg, hand and fingers. The boy was burned on the left hand, arm and back, she said.

Baelo is charged with two counts of first degree assault.

Chan set bail at $25,000.

According to a police affidavit filed in court after Baelo's arrest last week, a counselor at the Kalihi office of Parents and Children Together saw the injuries to the boy and notified police.
