Weather: Showers early, clearing this afternoon

Advertiser Staff

Gentle to moderate trade winds will gradually rebuild over the islands today as the remnants of a cold front dissipate across Maui County and Oahu, the National Weather Service said.

Moisture from the decaying front will focus clouds and showers over the central portion of the state, with a drying trend expected during the afternoon, forecasters said.

Weather conditions north of the state will take over tonight and Friday, leading to moderate trade winds and a typical pattern of windward and mauka showers through the weekend.

Trade winds will strengthen early next week as a shear line is expected to move over the state from the north.

Here's a closer look at what to expect as we head toward the weekend:

Today...Mostly cloudy with scattered showers in the morning... Then mostly sunny with isolated showers in the afternoon. Highs around 78. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 50 percent.
