Keep the extra blanket and those socks handy, Hawai'i — it will be cold again tonight.

Cooler weather — at least by Hawai'i standards — will prevail through tomorrow, when the typical trade wind weather returns, said National Weather Service forecaster Bob Burke.

But if you thought it was cold last night and on Tuesday, you were right. The coldest spot in the state Tuesday night was Lihu'e, Kaua'i, at a cool 59 degrees. At Honolulu International Airport, the thermometer registered a balmy 65 degrees.

"For the next couple of nights it will be rather cool, but not at record lows because of the cloud cover," Burke said. "Usually several times over the winter months, we see fronts bringing in cold air from the north."

The cold front stalled over Maui yesterday, leaving a cloud ridge that trapped heat over the Valley Isle as well as O'ahu, making both islands warmer than Kaua'i, where the skies were clear, Burke said.

Other low overnight temperatures reported to the National Weather Service yesterday were 65 at Kalaeloa, 64 at Marine Base Hawaii, Kane'ohe, and 61 at Hilo airport.

The coldest Jan. 28 on record occurred in 1975, when the temperature dropped to 56 degrees. The average low for January is 65 degrees, according to National Weather Service records.

Even after returning from the frigid East Coast, Tai Hong said he felt cold in his Mariner's Ridge home in Hawai'i Kai. He pulled out an extra blanket and was still cold.

"I'm in sweats, a sweater and socks," Hong said yesterday. "I thought maybe I brought the cold weather back with me. On the ridge here, it's generally 5 degrees cooler than down below."

The high yesterday was about 75 degrees, Burke said, about 5 degrees lower than normal for this time of year. On Tuesday, the temperature crept up to to a high of 71, Burke said.

"It will warm up a little by the weekend," Burke said. "There may be a weak cold front passing north of us on Tuesday or Wednesday, but that might not materialize. It may just pass us by."
