Kaiser boys pull off another upset, 2-0

By Leila Wai

The Kaiser boys soccer team has thrown itself into O'ahu Interscholastic Association title contention.

The Cougars, the sixth and final squad out of the East, earned its second upset in as many days, this time a 2-0 win over East No. 2 Roosevelt in the OIA Red Division quarterfinals last night at Mililani High School.

Kaiser (5-6-3), which scored both goals off of throw-ins, advanced to the semifinals against West No. 1 Mililani (10-1-2) tomorrow at 5:15 p.m. at Roosevelt.

With last night's win, Kaiser earned one of the OIA's six berths into the HHSAA Division I state tournament, which runs Feb. 11 to 14 at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

The Cougars used their sixth seed as motivation, assistant coach Michelle Schreiner said.

"If you had to pick a time to peak, now's the time," Schreiner added.

Roosevelt (7-3-3) still has a chance to qualify for the state tournament, but must win its next game and advance to the fifth-place game.

Kaiser senior midfielder/forward Beau Stueber scored in the 30th minute when he headed in a throw-in by freshman defender Brandon Ale. Stueber's deflection bounced to the right, far post and freshman Gen Asano followed the ball to ensure it went into the goal.

"I was just (running) to the near post and I flicked it in," Stueber said.

Kaiser scored again when Ale threw the ball in to Asano, who slotted a low ball into the goal on one touch three minutes into the second half.

At 5 feet, Asano was easily the shortest player on the field. In comparison, Steuber is the Cougars' tallest player at 6 feet.

"I'm pretty happy about it," Asano said of scoring. "Usually I don't get those goals. I was like, 'Yes, it's coming to me.' So I just went for the ball."

Two minutes later Roosevelt senior midfielder Keenan Seguancia took a shot that bounced off the crossbar.

The Rough Riders created opportunities through Seguancia, but played without leading goal scorer Ryan Pena, a senior forward who had 10 goals this season.

Pena was out because of a "gash" in his knee that he suffered against Moanalua, Roosevelt coach Ed Ota said.

"You've got to play with the hand you're dealt with," Ota said. "Kaiser was a little better. They wanted it more than us, I think."

Ale, whose throws consistently reached beyond the near post of the goal, was named a captain for last night's game because of his play the previous night in the Cougars' 2-0 win over West No. 3 Pearl City.

"(His throw-ins) have been improving every game," Schreiner said. "Now he's finding marks, and it resulted in one goal last night, and two tonight."

MILILANI 1, LEILEHUA 0

Mililani junior defender Ryan Akiu blasted an untouchable shot from 35 yards out in the 65th minute for the lone goal of the game at Mililani.

The Trojans were down a player after the 23rd minute of the game when a player was red carded.

KAPOLEI 2, KALAHEO 0

Micah Uehara scored two goals as Kapolei, the West No. 4 seed, upset East No. 1 Kalaheo at 'Aiea.

The Hurricanes (9-4-1) will play Moanalua (8-3-3) in the semifinals tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Roosevelt.

MOANALUA 1, 'AIEA 0

Hyo Won Kim scored for Moanalua, the East No. 3 seed, to help beat host and West No. 2 'Aiea.
