HAENA, Kauai — A 42-year-old woman visitor from Staffordshire, England, was rescued by Kauai firefighters yesterday afternoon after she was injured while hiking to Hanakapiai Falls.

She was taken to Wilcox Hospital, where she was treated and released.

A park ranger from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources contacted police dispatch about 4:30 p.m., saying the woman needed help getting out of the valley.

The county helicopter, Air-1, was called to the scene. After locating the woman a short distance from Hanakapiai Falls, the pilot flew to a Lihue sports field and picked up a three-member rescue crew from the Lihue fire station.

The chopper then flew back to Hanakapiai to rescue the woman.

She was flown to Princeville Airport, where paramedics were waiting to take her to Wilcox Hospital.
