Man dies of apparent drowning off Big Island

Advertiser Staff

A 64-year-old man died after he was pulled unconscious from waters off Kapoho Vacationland on the Big Island this morning.

The man was identified by Hawaiçi County police as Hamilton Manley of Kurtistown.
Fire rescue crews were sent to the area near the Waiopae Tidepools at about 9:42 this morning. When they got there, the victim had already been brought to shore and bystanders were performing CPR.
A witness said the swimmer got into trouble about 10 minutes after going snorkeling. The witness and a bystander swam to the struggling swimmer and brought him to shore.
Manley was taken to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at about 11 a.m., police said.
Police do not suspect foul play and have classified the case as a coroner’s inquest. An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death.
