Digital days don't mean fewer pics

By Treena Shapiro

Last weekend, my 5-year-old found an old ornament my son had made me, with the photograph torn off. She found a new photo of him and glued it on. Then, for good measure, she pulled a photo of herself out of a frame, cropped out her face and glued it next to her brother's head.

To drive the point home, she hung it on the door as a constant reminder that she feels left out because the hundreds and hundreds of gigabytes of digital photos and videos don't have the same heft as the photo albums and boxes of photos featuring her brother — all taken before I got my first digital camera.

With her birthday creeping up on me, I've been going through thousands of photos and picking which ones to print so she can stop being so jealous of all the faded photos I took of my son before I got my first digital camera.

I've noticed that I've been influenced by the time I've spent on the 'Ohana page looking at reader-submitted photos, which I can't look at without grinning or giggling. I love the brand-new baby pics, the studio shots of well-fed babies and the family photos people choose to share with the world, sometimes because they're absolutely adorable and sometimes because they're adorably absurd.
