Director Singer (of "Valkyrie," "Superman Returns" and "X-Men" fame) also hosted a lunch at Wolfgang's Steakhouse at the Royal Hawaiian Center, with actor Orlando Bloom ("Lord of the Rings," "Pirates of the Caribbean") among the guests. ...

The folks at Cheeseburger Island Style Wailea were thrilled when some Hollywood types, vacationing on Maui, showed up, including Hillary Duff, Justin Chambers ("Grey's Anatomy"), Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard. ...

TRAVEL LOG: Eddie Kamae and The Sons of Hawai'i will perform in Japan July 23-25 — Kamae's first visit there in 50 years. In that earlier pilgrimage, he recorded with Harry Haruhiko Haida for Japan Records' Victor Co. "At that time, Eddie was made the No. 1 member of the 'Ukulele Club by his friend, Harry, who founded the Nihon 'Ukulele Association and 'Ukulele Club," said wife Myrna Kamae. Honolulu-based Rabbi Peter B. Schaktman of Temple Emanu-el flew to New York to officiate at the recent wedding of Ariella Perlman and Robert John. She is the flutist and jewelry-making daughter of Itzhak Perlman, the eminent Israeli-American violinist, and he is an ex-Honolulu Symphony member who now is principal horn with the Dayton Symphony and knew Schaktman here. A local rabbi journeying to New York is akin to taking coals to Newcastle. ...

TROPICAL TOPICS: Tropics Bar & Grill's recent launch at the Hilton Hawaiian Village was hot, hot, hot, with Don Tiki, Cecilio and Kapono and Taimane Gardner among the troupers on the beachfront stages. Executive chef Jeffrey Vigilla was all smiles with the reception. A hit: the Don Tiki dancers, all clad in headpieces fashioned like exotic cocktails, designed by Tunui Tully and spot-on for the Tropics. ...

SPELL IT F-U-N: You never know who might be "spell-bound" in Manoa Valley Theatre's "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" musical, now playing. Audience participants will include enlistees state Rep. Isaac Choy, Brian Schatz, Ben Gutierrez (KGMB9), Angela Keen, Pamela Young (KITV4) and Leland Kim (KHNL8). At rehearsals, attorney Jeff Portnoy and wife Sandi were willing fill-ins. "It's been so much fun," said Jeff, MVT board president, who misspelled a difficult word. ...

Marcelo Pacleb, who produced dance numbers for the recent Miss Hawaii pageant, is working with director Ron Bright on "West Side Story," which launches Sept. 25 at Paliku Theatre. Pacleb, founder of the 24-VII DanceForce group, treks to Los Angeles for "So You Think You Can Dance" — a reunion with Kupono Aweau, who is in the reality show. ...
