Curb environmental impact

Advertiser Staff

Eating locally doesn't have to be a production. Tips on consuming more locally produced foods:

  • Join a "community supported agriculture" farm, where you buy food directly from the farmer.

  • Cook one meal a week using local and seasonal ingredients.

  • Shop at local farmers markets.

  • Eat at restaurants that serve locally produced foods.

  • Grow your own.

    TARO FARMING

REPPUN ROOTS GO WAY BACK ON WINDWARD O'AHU

From Waiahole Poi Factory & Farm — The Amazing Reppuns.

No, they're not a family of circus acrobats, but the Reppun boys (and one girl) are truly amazing. Descendants of Dr. Carl Reppun — who emigrated from Russia to Kahalu'u in the 1920s, then traveled on horseback to practice medicine all over the island, operated on Princess Kawananakoa's son, David, and sired three boys who had more boys — the Reppuns who remain on the Windward side of O'ahu to farm their taro are originals.

The six Reppun men include taro farmers Paul (above) — who graduated summa cum laude from Harvard, by the way — and Charlie. See a video of Paul Reppun on Edgy Lee's blog at www.lifeisgood.honadvblogs.com.
