2 teens killed in one-car crash

Advertiser Staff

Police are investigating to determine if speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in a one-car crash in Kula, Maui, early yesterday that killed two teenagers.

Police identified the victims as Wailuku residents Laula Wallace, 19, and Kai'o Fukushima, 16. Both were backseat passengers.

Wallace was pronounced dead at the scene and Fukushima died at Maui Memorial Medical Center, police said.

Police said five people were in a 1994 Honda Civic traveling north on Kula Highway yesterday morning. A 23-year-old Wailuku man was driving. At 1:27 a.m., police said, the car went out of control about one-tenth of a mile north of Noholoa Street in Kula.

The Honda hit the right guardrail, crossed over the center line and hit the guardrail on the opposite side, police said.

Four of the five occupants were thrown from the car. They were not wearing seat belts, police said.

The two deaths were the ninth and 10th traffic fatalities in Maui County this year, compared to 12 at this time last year.
