Big Island company to pay $82,000 for cesspool violation

Associated Press

HONOLULU — Federal authorities say a Big Island company has agreed to pay $82,000 for failing to close large capacity cesspools in Hilo.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Tuesday that K. Taniguchi Ltd. has also agreed to close all the large capacity cesspools they own and operate at 50 East Puianako Street.
The cesspools will be replaced by wastewater systems.
Federal regulations have prohibited large capacity cesspools since April 2005. The regulations don’t apply to single-family homes connected to their own individual cesspools.
