Alleged robber dies in hotel fight

By Will Hoover

A man suffered fatal injuries in the Hyatt Regency Waikiki hotel last night in what police said was an altercation following a robbery attempt.

Police said a man, reportedly in his 30s, robbed a 12-pack of beer from an ABC Store in the hotel about 9 p.m. A fight ensued between the robber and a store employee, police said. As the robber was punching the employee, a third person — a tourist — tackled the robber, police said.

The robber suffered fatal injuries, police said. The nature of the injuries was not immediately disclosed.

The fight took place inside the Hyatt Regency. Hotel security personnel ordered an Advertiser reporter off the property, and said the manager would be available for questions today.

Police homicide investigators were at the scene. The incident was initially classified as an unattended death, police said.
