Makawao golfer Cyr advances in match play

Sam Cyr, of Makawao, Maui, defeated Carl Smith IV of Laguna Beach, Calif., 2 and 1, in the round of 64 at today’s match play of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Men’s Amateur Championship in Dupont, Wash.

Cyr, seeded third, will face No. 30 David Fern of Spokane, Wash., tomorrow The winner will advance to the round of 16 later in the afternoon.
Cyr, a King Kekaulike graduate who won his second straight NAIA national championship at Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) in May, was all squared with No. 62 Smith through the first four holes. Cyr went one up on the fifth hole and never trailed thereafter. He was 4 up after the 13th hole.
