Passenger dies after driver allegedly ignores stop sign

Advertiser Staff

An 18-year-old woman was killed Monday night when the car she was a passenger in disregarded a stop sign and collided with a sport utility vehicle in Kaimuki, police said.

The medical examiner's officer identified the woman as Dallas Arias of Honolulu.

Police said the crash took place at 8:42 p.m. at the intersection of 7th Avenue and Kilauea Avenue.

Police said the car was south-bound on 7th Avenue when it entered the intersection with Kilauea and broadsided the SUV. The impact caused the SUV to veer off the road and hit two parked cars.

Arias apparently was not wearing a seat belt, police said. Paramedics took her to a hospital in critical condition. She was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Police said speed and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash.

The driver, 21-year-old Devin Alexander Martin of Kapahulu, was arrested for investigation of second-degree negligent homicide and an outstanding warrant.

The driver of the SUV was not injured.

Police said Arias was the 32nd traffic fatality of the year, compared with 24 at the same time last year.
