Colleges: Despite money cuts, Washington State won't cut sports

Associated Press

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University does not plan any radical cuts to balance a $350,000 decrease in its athletics department budget.

The department will evaluate the size of travel squads in all sports, use ground transportation to competitions within 400 miles of Pullman, reduce the print run of media guides, and reduce the amount of professional development travel and international recruiting.

Athletics director Jim Sterk said WSU will end some internships and some positions will not be filled.

Some Pac-10 programs have killed sports programs to balance the books, but Sterk said all 17 sports will remain at WSU.
