ISLE FILE
Transpacific leader cleans up

Advertiser Staff

Despite picking up unwanted trash, Neville Crichton's Reichel Pugh 100 Alfa Romero moved ahead of the fleet late yesterday in the 2,225-nautical mile Transpacific Yacht race from Los Angeles to Hawai'i.

Alfa Romero cruising at 16 knots, had to back down twice yesterday. First to remove a piece of fishing net from its keel, and later a plastic bag from its rudder.

Alfa Romero, Akela and Criminal Mischief are the frontrunners for divisional titles and possibly course records.

Akela, Bill Turpin's Reichel Pugh 78, is looking at the Barn Door Trophy for the fastest elapsed time.

Alfa Romero is expected to cross the Diamond Head finish line Saturday.
