Lihu'e man dies in crash broadside into tractor-trailer

Advertiser Staff

Police said speed and alcohol appear to be factors in a two-vehicle crash that killed a 25-year-old Lihu'e man on Kaumuali'i Highway yesterday morning.

Police said Patrick Powell was driving a Nissan Pathfinder westbound on Halewili Road when he ran through a stop sign, turned left onto Kaumuali'i Highway and broadsided a southbound Garden Isle Disposal tractor-trailer pulling a roll-off container.

The Pathfinder spun around, flipped over and landed in a drainage ditch on the east side of Kaumuali'i Highway, police said.

Powell's two male passengers had non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Kaua'i Veterans' Memorial Hospital for treatment, police said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

Police closed a portion of the highway and diverted traffic onto Halewili Road and 'Ele'ele Road. The highway was reopened at 2:30 p.m.

Powell is Kaua'i's sixth traffic fatality this year. There were eight fatalities in the same period last year.
