Advertiser Staff

The Associated Press is reporting that the U.S. military in Iraq has sentenced Sgt. Miguel Vegaquinones to three years in jail for the shooting death of fellow Schofield Barracks soldier Pfc. Sean McCune.

The military said Vegaquinones pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for negligently discharging one round on Jan. 11 after guard duty in Samarra.
As part of a pretrial agreement, Vegaquinone's sentence was cut by six months. He was also reduced in rank to private and dishonorably discharged.
Vegaquinones and McCune were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.
