Police seize more than 1,000 marijuana plants on Maui

Advertiser Staff

Maui police have confiscated more than 1,000 marijuana plants during a bust of an indoor growing operation in Makawao.

They also took possession of fluorescent and high-pressure sodium grow lights, fans and other equipment allegedly used to grow the plants.

Police arrested 36-year-old Eric Welander, who has been charged with first-degree commercial promotion of marijuana, second-degree promotion of marijuana, and felony possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Police records say Welander posted $145,000 bail last week.

Police typically find several hundred marijuana plants in indoor-growing operations. In this case, they found nearly 1,200 plants indoors and 35 growing outside in the yard and on a deck.
