Smith wins 2nd world surf title

Advertiser Staff

Jennifer Smith of California won the Roxy ASP Women's World Longboard Championship yesterday.

The semifinals and final were run in 1- to 3-foot waves at Biarritz, France.

Smith, 23, defeated Coline Menard of Reunion Island in the one-on-one final, 12.25-9.55. It is Smith's second world title (she also won in 2007).

"I had no expectations this year as I had not won an event in months, maybe a year," said Smith, who received $5,000. "I came over here to give my best and see what happens, and I made the final and won. It's just so good to get a second one."

Because there is no world tour for women's longboard surfing, the winner of the Roxy contest is considered the world champion.

The five Hawai'i surfers in the field were eliminated in the earlier rounds. Kelia Moniz and Geodee Clark tied for fifth and were the top Hawai'i finishers. They each received $1,100.

Joy Monahan of 'Aina Haina was eliminated in the first round. She was the 2008 world champion.

All surfers in the contest had to ride boards at least 9 feet long.

It is the fifth of 10 stops on the 2009 ASP World Tour.
