Maekawa advances; Perez falls

    Advertiser Staff

     • Life's great caddying for a champ

Sean Maekawa of Pa'auilo, Hawai'i advanced, but 'Ewa Beach's Ryan Perez did not yesterday at the U.S. Amateur Public Links in Norman, Okla.

Maekawa defeated Robert Hoadley of Southern Pines, N.C., 4 and 3, while Perez lost to Luke Guthrie of Quincy, Ill., 2 up.

Maekawa led from the fourth hole when he parred and Hoadley bogeyed. Two more Hoadley bogeys enabled Maekawa to go 3 up, with Maekawa eventually pulling away.

Perez's match was all square after 10 holes. But Perez bogeyed two of the next three holes, enabling Guthrie to take a 2-up lead.

Maekawa will play Lion Kim of Ann Arbor, Mich., in a Round of 32 match today. The winner plays in the Round of 16 later in the day.

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played tomorrow with the championship on Saturday.
