A discarded cigarette started the fire that did $50,000 in damage to a two-story, single-family dwelling on Lania Place in the Newtown area of Aiea early today, fire investigators have determined.

Four adults and three children, ages 1 to 6, were able to escape without injury after a smoke alarm sounded, said Capt. Earle Kealoha, spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department.
The fire was reported just after 1:30 a.m. and was extinguished by 2:15 a.m.
The fire, which was confined to a downstairs family room, caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to the structure and $20,000 to the home's contents.
The fire was accidental and started in the closet of a family room on the first floor of the home, Kealoha said.
The Red Cross was assisting the residents.
