Kim tied for 9th at Girls Jr. golf

Big Island native Kimberly Kim shot 1-under-par 71 yesterday and was tied for ninth after the first round of stroke play in the U.S. Girls Junior Championship at Bedminster, N.J.

Erynne Lee of Silverdale, Wash., shot a 67 for a two-stroke lead at the Trump National Golf Club's Old Course.

Kim is a 17-year-old who now lives in Arizona. Other Hawai'i golfers in the tournament are Casey Isagawa, of Wailuku, Maui, who is tied for 42nd after a 76, Alina Ching of Honolulu, tied for 82nd, after a 79 and Cyd Okino of Honolulu, tied for 137th after an 85.

The low 64 scores after today's second round advance to match play.

In the U.S. Junior Amateur, being played at Trump's New Course, 'Iolani sophomore Lorens Chan is tied for 37th after a 1-over 73 in the first round of stroke play.

Juan Luna of Colombia shot a 66 for a one-stroke lead.

BASEBALL

MAUI BIG LEAGUE 3-0

Riley Beeson singled in the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh inning as Maui beat San Jose, Calif., 5-3, yesterday in the Little League Big League (ages 16-18) West Regional at Bremerton, Wash.

Maui (Hawai'i) improved to 3-0 and clinched the No. 1 seed in its pool.

Maui plays Las Vegas (Nevada) tomorrow in its final pool play game.

Maui's Skyler Cabacungan had a two-run double in the third. Riley Beeson then singled in Cabacungan.

San Jose (Northern California) scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to tie it at 3-all.

Earlier in the day, Aaron Asato pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts as Maui routed Billings (Montana), 10-0.

Maui's Isaiah Kaneakua batted 3 for 4 and Matt McCraney went 2 for 3.

On Sunday, Isaiah Diaz pitched a five-hitter with eight strikeouts as Maui beat West Seattle (Washington), 11-2.

SOCCER

CHING AN ALL-STAR

Houston coach Dominic Kinnear picked three of his own Dynamo players, including Hale'iwa native Brian Ching, to join the MLS All-Star team.

Also named to the 18-man roster were Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad and midfielder Brad Davis.

The MLS All-Stars will head to Sandy, Utah, for the game against Everton of the Premier League on July 29.

BILLFISH

KONA TOURNEY BEGINS

Malibu Marlin Club and Team Malaka each scored 600 points to tie for the lead yesterday on the first day of the 50th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament at Kailua, Kona.

Two Japan teams — Grand Hilton Vacations Fishing Club and Tica Game Fishing Club — were tied for third with 400 points.

Sixteen Pacific blue marlin and five short nose spearfish were tagged and released, and three ahi were boated on the first day.

The tournament runs through Friday.
