Flash flood warning extended until 9:30 p.m. for Kauai

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service has extended a flash-flood warning for Kauai until 9:30 p.m.
Meanwhile Kaua'i County officials reopened both lanes of Kuhio Highway in Hanalei shortly before 8 p.m. Police had closed the road earlier today because of flooding in the area.
People in low-lying areas were urged to move to higher ground.

The bridge was first closed about 10:45 a.m. today because of flooding before reopening around 2:45 p.m. About 4 p.m. it was closed again. At 7 p.m. one lane was open and about 7:53 both lanes were opened.
At 6:25 p.m. today, radar showed that an area of heavy rainfall was nearly stationary about 50 miles south of Kauai.
The Hanalei bridge was still under water. The Hanalei River was not rising, and standing water in the field of the valley was draining slowly.
The atmosphere remains moist and unstable and the threat of heavy rains remains.
Residents and visitors are urged not to cross fast-flowing or rising water in a vehicle or on foot.
Motorists are advised to drive with caution as ponding is occurring in various parts of the island due to heavy rains.
