In 1859, Native Hawaiians were dying at such an alarming rate that Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV went door to door to collect money for what 150 years later is known as The Queen's Medical Center.

Emme Tominbang's new special "The Queen's Medical Center: 150 Years of Moments" looks back at the need for a facility to deal with the diseases and vitamin deficiencies decimating the population and how the hospital has carried out the royal couple's vision throughout its storied history.

The special premieres July 30 at 9 p.m. on KHON2 and will be rebroadcast Aug. 1 at 4 p.m.

HOT-WEATHER WORKOUTS

BEAT THE HEAT IN HEALTHY WAYS

When sticky summer days sap your exercise staying power, new studies offer these beat-the-heat tricks:

  • Set your alarm: Chances are you'll last up to 12 percent longer on hot days if you work out in the morning, when your body temperature is lower.

  • Guzzle water before you go: Hydrating pre-exercise could increase your stamina 14 percent. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends slowly sipping about half a liter at least four hours before your sweat session to ward off dehydration and its fatiguing effect.

  • Refill with a cold one: You'll bump up your endurance 23 percent by sipping a chilly drink (39 degrees) rather than a hot one (98.6 degrees) as you exercise. Keep water cold for 12 hours with a steel hydration bottle.
