Advertiser Staff

The main check-in station for hunters in Koke'e, Kaua'i, near mile marker 8, was destroyed by fire Wednesday night, and a water tank and public toilet facility on the property was partially damaged.

No one was injured in the fire.

Damage to the 20-by-20-foot wooden structure and its contents, water tank and toilet were estimated at about $50,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Police dispatch received a call about the fire about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Five fire companies responded to the alarm. When they arrived, the structure was fully engulfed by flames, and the fire had spread to a water tank and public toilet facility.

The fire was deemed under control at 10:20 p.m. and fully extinguished at 11:49 p.m.

According to a state Department of Land and Natural Resources official, a temporary check-in station will be set up to accommodate hunters this weekend.
