ISLE FILE
Apana to coach Roosevelt

Advertiser Staff

Former University of Hawai'i standout and Triple-A pro baseball pitcher Matt Apana has been named head coach at Roosevelt High School, his alma mater.

Apana, 38, replaces Craig Arakawa, who stepped down after four seasons at the helm.

Apana most recently was pitching coach at Hawai'i Pacific University from 2005 to 2008 and was an assistant at Punahou for four years before that. After a successful UH career, he played five seasons in the Seattle Mariners organization, eventually reaching the Triple-A level.

As a Roosevelt senior in 1989, Apana helped the Rough Riders reach the O'ahu Interscholastic Association championship game.

"I'm excited, it's all about giving back to the community and teaching these kids to be good people as well as good athletes," Apana said.
