WASHINGTON — Delaware’s House Majority Leader is calling the NFL hypocritical for a lawsuit the league filed with other sports to block sports betting in the state.
Democrat Peter Schwartzkopf (Schwartz-kopf) sent a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Tuesday citing “the close nexus” between gambling and the leagues.
The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter, which was also sent to the other plaintiffs in the case: Major League Baseball, the NBA, the NHL and the NCAA.
Congress banned sports betting in 1992 while grandfathering in four states — Delaware, Nevada, Montana and Oregon — that had already offered it.
Last week’s lawsuit, filed in federal court in Delaware, seeks to block the state from implementing sports betting.
