Water polo: US still has chance at 2 medals

Associated Press

ROME — The United States is the only country that still has a chance for two water polo medals at the world championships.

The American women (4-1) will face Greece (3-2) in the semifinals Wednesday at the Foro Italico. Canada (4-0-1) takes on Russia (4-0) in the other semi, with the winners advancing to Friday’s gold medal game. The losers will play for bronze.
On the men’s side, the U.S. (4-0) advanced to Thursday’s semifinals with an 8-5 victory over Germany. The Americans face Spain (4-0), which beat Canada 11-4.
The other semi pits Croatia (4-0) against Serbia (3-1-1). Croatia defeated Romania 7-5 in the quarterfinals, while the Serbians knocked off Hungary 10-9 in extra time.
Both U.S. teams won silver medals at the Beijing Olympics.
