Help sought in finding car that almost hit police officer in Aiea

Advertiser Staff

Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a suspect and a car involved in an incident early Wednesday morning in which a driver allegedly tried to run over a police officer in the parking lot of the Aiea Best Buy store. The officer reported firing a single shot at the fleeing vehicle.

Police received a report of a suspicious vehicle parked at the store’s loading dock, and a patrol officer arrived at the store about 12:05 a.m. He said he got out of his car and was approaching the driver at the loading dock when the car accelerated straight at him. He said he was able to jump out of the path of the oncoming car and fire off a shot from his service handgun. It is not known if the car or driver was hit by the bullet.
The driver is described as being 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-11, 220 to 250 pounds, with a heavy build and tan complexion. He was wearing dark clothing.
Police are also looking for the suspect vehicle, a 2007 silver, four-door Toyota Camry. The car was stolen from the Date Street area this past Sunday.
Police have classified the case as an attempted first-degree murder and an attempted burglary.
