Police officer shoots at fleeing car

Police yesterday were looking for two men, one of whom allegedly tried to run down an officer in the parking lot of the Best Buy store in 'Aiea. The officer drew his handgun and fired at the vehicle.

Police were called to the store about 12:05 a.m. yesterday to investigate a report of a suspicious vehicle at the loading dock.

The officer said that as he arrived on the scene, a man rode past him on a bicycle and refused an order to stop.

The 35-year-old officer then saw a man behind the wheel of the vehicle parked at the loading dock and got out of his car to approach the man.

Police said the driver gunned the motor and drove straight at the officer, who was able to jump out of the way to avoid being hit. The officer fired at the vehicle as it drove past him, police said.

Police yesterday afternoon issued an all-points-bulletin for the driver of the car, described as a stolen 2007 silver Toyota Camry.

Police classified the incident as attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree burglary and refusing an order to stop.

It was the fourth time this year that police have fired a weapon at a suspect, according to police records.
