Find some 'Southern Comfort' at the Academy tonight

Advertiser Staff

Tonight's Art After Dark will be a Friday night honky tonk, with country music, Southern rock and backwoods-style barbecue.

The musical entertainment includes live Southern rock from the Piranha Brothers band, blue grass and a Rock Band 2 contest. There will also be line dancing performances throughout the night, as well as pick-up horseshoes games.

Hungry folks can pick from a menu of $3-5 dishes ranging that include bourbon 'n' molasses pork belly, hush pupples, grits with all the fixings, pork sausage cream gravy and pickled watermelon, among other southern-style food stuffs. Meanwhile, those with a thirst for something different can try the Town's version of grilled lemon lynchberg lemonade, spiked with Jack Daniels.

The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and is free for Academy members and $10 for everyone else. Admission includes gallery viewings, including docent-led All-American Zip Tours of the American Art gallery at 7 and 7:30 p.m.

If you aren't sure where the Academy of Arts is, look for the mustangs parked on the lawn on Beretania between Ward Avenue and Victoria Street. For more information, visit http://www.artafterdark.org/event/2009/07/31/southern-comfort.
