Tennis: Jankovic upset by 19-year-old Cirstea

Associated Press

PARIS — Former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic has been upset by 19-year-old Sorana Cirstea in the fourth round of the French Open.

Cirstea outlasted the No. 5-seeded Jankovic 3-6, 6-0, 9-7 Monday.

The unseeded Cirstea, ranked 41st, became the first Romanian woman to reach the quarterfinals at a major tournament since Irina Spirlea was a U.S. Open semifinalist in 1997. Cirstea had never advanced beyond the second round in her previous five major events.

Jankovic served for the match at 5-4 in the final set and was two points from victory at 30-love, but she hit too many tentative shots on key points. Cirstea converted her third match point with a backhand winner, hopping on the clay in jubilation.
