Mikaele Oloa, the 19-year-old winner at the 17th annual World Fireknife Championships, held at the Polynesian Cultural Center in La'ie, is a former three-time world champion. His 17-year-old cousin VJ (last year's winner) took second place. These young dancers already hold jobs at resorts. Mikaele works at the Fiafia Luau at the Marriott hotel in Ko Olina and VJ is in Orlando, Fla.

They have become role models for a group of very young competitors. About 30 dancers, ages 17 and under, competed this year.

Ä GREEN SCENE

STAY CLEAN AND SAFE IN THE KITCHEN

Sterilize your cutting boards with this one-two punch. First, spray them with a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution. Dry the board, then spray again with undiluted white vinegar. Dry the board thoroughly because bacteria thrive in moist places, says Alan Greene, a pediatrician at Stanford's Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.

Remember to use one cutting board for meat and another for vegetables, he says. After handling meat, always wash your hands with warm, soapy water and dry them thoroughly. Disinfect your sponge by running it through the dishwasher or heating it in the microwave for at least 30 seconds.
