Marines detail plans to protect Bellows

Marine officials today outlined steps they plan to take to protect the environment at Bellows Air Force Station and protect the public who use the campgrounds on weekends.

The Marine Corps said yesterday that it would temporarily close weekend public beach access to curtail illegal activities, including dumping, drug use, campfires, off-roading on the beach and vehicle break-ins.
The measures announced today are intended to help address such problems. The measures include:

  • Putting up barriers to keep cars off the sand and out of the campgrounds;
  • Erecting signs that tell people what is and is not allowed at Bellows;
  • Having a presence at the gate to make sure construction debris is not being brought in and passing out informational brochures.
    The Marine Corps reiterated today that the campgrounds and beach access will be reopened to the public in July.
