State to open trails in Moanaula Valley on Saturday

The state is opening two new hiking trails in Moanalua Valley Saturday in celebration of National Trails Day.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Na Ala Hele Oahu Trail Advisory Council will have a public ceremony at 9 a.m. with brief remarks, followed by the installation of new signs at the gate and trail heads.

The two trails — Kamananui Valley Road Trail and Kulanaahane Trail — add 4.5 miles to the state's recreational hiking inventory. As of Saturday, the state will have 42 managed forest trails on Oçahu.

About the trails:

Kamananui Valley Road – starts at end of Ala Aolani road.
Length: 2.5 miles – end point 2.5 miles in the valley

Kulanaahane trail – starts at end of Kamananui Valley Road
Length: 2 miles – end point Koolau Summit
