A change in defensive positions certainly did not affect Kailua senior Kale Sumner's production at the plate or in the field. If anything, he was even better.

And that's saying something for Sumner, who repeated as O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division Player of the Year after a recent vote of league coaches.

Sumner moved from third base to catcher, but proved early it would not affect his batting. In the season opener against Kaiser, Sumner went 3 for 5 with a three-run homer and seven RBIs. Later against Castle, Sumner went 3 for 3 with three doubles.

Sumner is joined on the East All-Star first team by two other Surfriders: outfielder Kory Sasaoka and utility player Alika Ramseyer-Ho.

Moanalua led the way with four selections: shortstop Tim Arakawa, outfielder Miles Higa, pitcher Zach Manago and designated hitter Regan Lum.

Kaiser placed second baseman Joe Honma and pitcher Zach Wong. Roosevelt first baseman Lowen Kaho'oilihala, Castle third baseman Keola Jarrett and Kalani outfielder Wataru Noguchi round out the first team.

Moanalua's Scott Yamada was named Coach of the Year after guiding a young team to a 9-3 finish.
