Music and Dance of Hawai‘i hula returns to Bishop Museum for June

Advertiser Staff

Bishop Museum's popular Music and Dance of Hawai‘i hula program is returning this month following a $11,750 grant from the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

The hula program begins Friday in the Hawaiian Hall Atrium and will occur daily through June 29, except for Sundays and Tuesdays.
Waianae Coast kumu hula Noelani Chang and members of Hālau Na Mamo O Ka‘ala had provided the Music and Dance of Hawai‘i program at Bishop Museum for eight years before it ended in September.
“We’re ecstatic to be back at least for the month of June,” said Kumu Noelani. “We once again will share hula amongst the treasures of Hawai‘i. We will share our mana‘o, and perhaps enlighten visitors by providing a deeper understanding that hula is a way for us to keep our culture alive.”
Bishop Museum President & CEO Timothy Johns said, “Our staff is very excited to have Kumu Noelani back as part of our Museum programs. And we are grateful to the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts for granting us the funds to enable this program even if only for a short time.”
The hula program is included with Bishop Museum admission: $15.95 adults; $12.95 youth (ages 4-12) and seniors (65 years and older); $8.95 kama‘āina and military; $7.95 youth and senior kama‘āina and military. The hula program will include:
Noon: 30 minute Hula Show (kahiko & ‘auana)
12:45 p.m.: 45 minute Craft Demonstration (hula implements/easy hula lesson)
2 p.m.: 30 minute Hula Show (kahiko & ‘auana)
