Kailua High School softball coach Bernard Victor has retired after 32 seasons with the Surfriders program, the last 20 as head coach.

Victor, who recently turned 82, guided Kailua to four state championships and six O'ahu Interscholastic Association titles. The Surfriders won three straight state crowns from 1995 to 1997 and three consecutive OIA championships from 1994 to 1996.

Along the way, Victor and his staff also built and maintained perhaps the island's finest high school campus softball facility, which is now named Bernard Victor Field.

Victor joined Kailua as assistant coach under Howard Okita in 1978, a year after softball became an official OIA sport. Okita guided the Surfriders to six state titles and eight OIA championships from 1981 to 1989.

The school is accepting applications for the head coach position. Resumes may be sent to: Kailua Athletics 451 Ulumanu Drive, Kailua, HI 96734 or faxed to 263-1444. Resumes will be accepted until June 17.
