Maui fire out after scorching 400 acres

Advertiser Staff

Maui officials said a week-old fire in Kihei was extinguished at 1:30 p.m. today after blackening 400 acres. No injuries were reported.

The fire began mid-day on May 31 and burned an estimated
400 acres of vacant land mauka of Ohukai Road in South Kihei.

Although the fire was under control on Wednesday, MFD
personnel monitored the burned area throughout the week for hot spots.

45 firefighters along with helicopters, bulldozers and water tankers
battled the brush fire on difficult terrain to keep it from spreading to
nearby homes.

It came as close as 200 yards to the nearest structure but did not require evacuations and no buildings were damaged. The cause remains under investigation.
