Outdoor aficionados nationwide are celebrating the 17th Annual National Trails Day today, and Hawaiçi’s hiking enthusiasts aren’t about to be left out.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and Na Ala Hele Oçahu will celebrate with the grand opening of two new state forest hiking trails in Moanalua Valley.

“The land was recently acquired from the Damon Estate, and I inspected the valley along with the cultural practitioner whose lineage dates back here, and (we) felt that the road and trail were suitable for safe public recreation,” said DLNR trails specialist Aaron Lowe. “It’s such a beautiful area, and it’s now open for public access.”
The Kamananui Valley Road is a 2 1/2-mile-long access road that leads to the inside of Moanalua Valley.
Kulanaçahane Trail is about 2 miles long and takes you to the Koçolau Summit, which overlooks Käneçohe Bay.
“(The grand opening) gives an opportunity to remind the public that summer is here and to promote trail safety and the enjoyment of nature,” said DLNR spokeswoman Deborah Ward.
In addition to the grand opening, DLNR and Na Ala Hele Oçahu Trail Advisory Council are installing new advisory signs and improving other trails.
