BASKETBALL

BLAZERS AT PUNAHOU

Despite recent shoulder surgery, Portland Trail Blazers guard Steve Blake, along with teammate Channing Frye, will be instructors at the Punahou Summer Basketball Camp for boys and girls June 9 to 11 at Punahou gym.

Coaches running the camp include Punahou girls coach Mike Taylor, Alan Lum, Dennis Agena, Alan Ching and Byron Mello.

The sessions will be from 8 a.m. to noon for those entering third to sixth grades and from 1 to 5 p.m. for those entering seventh to 12th grade. The cost is $125.

Part of the proceeds will go to the Boys and Girls Club of Honolulu and the Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund.

A coaches clinic, featuring former University of Hawai'i women's coach Vince Goo, also will be held June 9 and 11 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The clinic will bring basketball coaches from all islands and all levels together to share philosophies. Greg Tacon, Dan Hale, Mello, Lum and Taylor also will be speaking.

MORE HOOP CAMPS

• The Derrick Low-'Iolani Basketball Clinic will be held June 13 at the school's upper gym. Low, a three-time All-State Player of the Year for 'Iolani, is a former Washington State star now playing professionally overseas. Kyle Pape, 2005 All-State Player of the Year from 'Iolani and Colorado School of Mines alum, also will be a featured instructor. There will be sessions from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. The clinic is open to boys and girls 8-17. The fee is $40. For information, e-mail ryan252004@yahoo.com.

• Former University of Hawai'i star and assistant coach Alika Smith will be one of the coaches at the Sole Fundamentals Basketball Camp June 15-19 at La Pietra School's gym. A session for boys and girls grades four to seven will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Another session for eighth to 12th graders will be from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. The cost is $100 and each participant receives a basketball and T-shirt. PADDLING

4-DAY COURSE OFFERED

Learn to paddle a surfski or an Olympic flatwater kayak at a four-day course offered by the Hawai'i Canoe and Kayak Team.

The course will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday to Thursday in waters fronting the Hui Nalu Canoe Club halau at Maunalua Bay in Hawai'i Kai.

The instructors will be U.S. national team kayaker Brandon Woods and HCKT head coach Robyn Singh. Stroke technique and kayak fundamentals will be stressed. The cost is $120. Call 366-3005 for more information.

SESSIONS THIS WEEKEND

The summer session for Hawai'i Speed and Quickness will be held this weekend at the University of Hawai'i's Klum Gym.

Each session is $10, and open to all ages. Sessions are from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Registration is at 8. Former and current UH athletes serve as instructors. Drills involve plyometrics and resistance workouts.
