HAWAII BRIEFS
Wrong-way driver guided off freeway

Advertiser Staff

An elderly male driver who mistakenly headed west in the east-bound lanes of Moanalua Freeway shortly before noon yesterday was safely returned home by Honolulu police.

The man apparently entered the freeway from the Fort Shafter offramp, then attempted to correct his error by reversing back down the ramp.

Police intervened, took the man's car keys and drove him home. The man indicated that he had become confused, police said.

PUNAHOU PROBING E-MAIL ALLEGATION

Punahou School says it is investigating allegations against a staff member that were made via an anonymous e-mail.

Punahou didn't identify the staff member, or what position he or she held at the Manoa private school.

It only said in a statement Friday that the school "will take immediate and appropriate action" if it finds there's been a violation of school policies.

The school said the claims relate to a situation that allegedly occurred four years ago and this is first time the school has heard of it.

The allegations include charges that a Punahou dean was sexually involved with a student.

7 STUDENTS BANNED FROM GRADUATION

Seven students at Kapolei High School, including the senior class president, were banned from attending their graduation ceremony after being arrested.

Honolulu police arrested the students early Friday, the same day as their ceremony. Witnesses say students had painted a large obscene image on a walkway and glued some door locks.

The senior class president, who was charged with trespassing and reckless driving, was scheduled to speak at Friday night's ceremony, but was replaced.

REWARD OFFERED IN MONK SEALS' DEATHS

The Surfrider Foundation's Kaua'i chapter has issued a $4,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the recent killings of two Hawaiian monk seals on the island.

A pregnant female seal was apparently shot to death last month. A male monk seal was also found dead on a Kaua'i beach in April.

Anyone with information about either killing is asked to call 800-853-1964.

Surfrider Foundation Kaua'i continues to accept donations for a fund established specifically for the reward. For more information, visit surfriderkauai .ning.com.
