Blazing new trails on the slopes of Haleakala, distance runner Bailey Massenburg enters the Hall of Honor tonight as the first-ever inductee from King Kekaulike High School.

After winning state championships in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs and taking second in the 3,000 as a junior — along with a third-place finish at the state cross country meet — Massenburg was named Maui Interscholastic League Female Athlete of the Year for 2007-2008.

She followed that with an even better senior year, winning the state cross country title and repeating as state champ in the 800 and 1,500 last month. Massenburg also was a member of Na Ali'i's winning 4x400 relay team.

In addition to her running exploits, she also was the No. 1 singles player on King Kekaulike's tennis team the past two years, helping Na Ali'i win an MIL team championship as a junior and a runner-up finish this past season.

Massenburg was just as outstanding in the classroom and community.

She posted a 4.095 grade-point average, was founder and coordinator of the "Meet the Need" Food Drive for the Maui Food Bank, a team member for a three-week mission to aid schools in Nicaragua, a volunteer in the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room, worship leader at Waipuna Chapel, and pianist and vocalist for the Maui Film Festival.

Massenburg also composed and performed an original song for a school musical and served as statistician for the girls soccer team.

She will attend Point Loma Nazarene University in the fall to study nursing and run cross country and track.
