Oahu lifeguards warn beachgoers of high surf on South Shore

Advertiser Staff

A high-surf advisory has Oahu lifeguards urging beachgoers to practice caution.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory for Leeward Oahu to the southern shore of the Waianae Coast, Niihau, Windward Kauai, Leeward Molokai, Lanai, Leeward Maui, Windward and Leeward Haleakala and the north, east and south shores of the Big Island.
The south swell will produce surf of 5 to 8 feet today and “be reinforced by a bigger episode on Tuesday into Wednesday,” according to the weather service.
Oahu lifeguards said today that beachgoers should:
1. Always swim at a beach with a lifeguard.
2. Consult with a lifeguard regarding ocean condition before entering the water.
3. Heed all warning signs.
4. Never swim alone.
5. Call for a lifeguard or dial 911 if you see a swimmer in distress.
6. Know your limits. If in doubt, don’t go out.
