Hawai‘i junior third baseman Vinnie Catricala became the first player with ties to Hawai‘I picked in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft today. Five other players with Hawai‘i ties also were picked.

Catricala was taken in the 10th round by the Seattle Mariners, the 293rd overall selection.
The fourth through 30th rounds were held today with rounds 31-50 scheduled for tomorrow.
Pearl City High graduate Bryson Namba, a third baseman, was picked in the 12th round by the Toronto Blue Jays, the 370th overall selection.
Also picked earlier was Hawai'I recruit Kirk Wetmore, a left-handed pitcher from Bellevue (Wash.) JC. He was picked in the 11th round by the Cleveland Indians.
Right-handed pitcher Cameron Bayne, a 2006 graduate of Saint Louis School, was picked in the 13th round by the Chicago White Sox, the 403rd overall pick. Bayne played for NAIA Concordia in California.
Bayne was picked in the 49th round by Cincinnati out of Saint Louis in 2006.
UH left-handed pitcher Sam Spangler was taken in the 20th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates, the 595th overall pick.
Spangler is a draft-eligible sophomore, as he red-shirted his true freshman year.
Pearl City High graduate Carlton Tanabe, a catcher, was taken in the 24th round by the Seattle Mariners. His father is former Hawai'I Rainbow catcher Collin Tanabe, a fifth-round pick by Milwaukee in 1981.
A player may sign with the team that selected him until 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Aug. 15 or until the player enters or returns to, a four-year college or junior college for the fall semester, whichever comes first. (Note: Major League Baseball may move the deadline to Aug. 17 because Aug. 15 is a Saturday, according to several sources,)
