A special Hawai'i edition of the U.S. Postal Service's large flat-rate shipping box will make its debut tomorrow, on Kamehameha Day.

The flat-rate box will be branded with an "Aloha From Hawaii" graphic and be available at most post offices statewide beginning tomorrow.

The postal service will host a ho'olaule'a to celebrate the debut, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Waikiki post office.

"We hope these new boxes will prompt Hawai'i residents to buy and ship more local products to friends, family and colleagues around the world. It's sort of a local-style economic stimulus plan," postal customer relations manager Gary Gardetto said.

The Hawai'i design will be available only on the large flat-rate boxes, which are 12 by 12 by 5 1/2 inches. They cost $13.95 to mail anywhere in the world (70-pound domestic and 20-pound international weight limits).

Other sizes of flat-rate boxes, all without the Hawai'i design, cost $4.95 to $11.95 to ship.

The Hawai'i design was created by postal employee Jasmine Lum, the daughter of Jerri Lum, a sales manager for the postal service. Gardetto said Jerri Lum pitched the design to their marketing manager, who forwarded it to USPS headquarters for approval.

Gardetto said USPS headquarters agreed to a localized design because it recognizes that the Hawai'i market for flat-rate mailing boxes is different than on the Mainland. No other state has a localized flat-rate box.

"The other states are curious to see how Hawai'i results will do," Gardetto said.
