Photos, histories sought for book about Kula Hospital

Advertiser Staff

The Kula Hospital Auxiliary is seeking photos, memorabilia and oral histories for a book to commemorate the hospital's centennial.

The facility was founded in 1910 by Dr. W. F. McConkey as a tuberculosis hospital called Kula Sanitorium or "Kula San." Since then, the hospital has undergone several transitions, at one time serving as a general hospital with surgery and labor-and-delivery services, and now as a long-term care and extended acute-care facility that recently was awarded a top 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The auxiliary hopes to publish the book by June 2010. Alberta Canha is the project coordinator and Patricia Brown is author and editor of the book.

To submit materials and donations for the book, contact Canha at 276-6802 or e-mail acanha@hhsc.org or can haa001@hawaii.rr.com.
