Westphal to coach Kings

Associated Press

The Sacramento Kings reached an agreement in principle with Paul Westphal late last night to be their fourth new coach in just over three years.

Westphal, a longtime NBA player and coach, went 267-159 during parts of seven seasons leading the Phoenix Suns and Seattle SuperSonics. He replaces interim coach Kenny Natt after the Kings finished 17-65, the worst record in the NBA and in franchise history.

The Kings fired Eric Musselman in 2007 after one tumultuous season, and NBA coaching newcomer Reggie Theus barely made it into his second campaign before being fired last December. Natt wasn't retained after finishing up a miserable season with Sacramento.

Whistle blower : Two days later, Phil Jackson called goaltending on his own center.

Before tip-off of Game 3 of the NBA finals, Jackson said Los Angeles center Pau Gasol should have been whistled for goaltending on Orlando guard Courtney Lee's missed layup in the final second of regulation in Game 2 on Sunday night.

Gasol's right hand grazed the net and his fingers hit the rim while he was trying to block Lee's miss.

"It's called basket interference," Jackson said yesterday. "Even if you hit the net supposedly in the process that's part of it, but that rule is kind of archaic.

Trade: The Philadelphia 76ers have traded forward Reggie Evans to the Toronto Raptors for shooter Jason Kapono.

Kapono's .454 shooting percentage on 3-pointers is tied with Steve Kerr for the best in NBA history.

Evans averaged 3.3 points and 4.6 rebounds last season.
