Hockey: Dallas Stars hire Marc Crawford as coach

By STEPHEN HAWKINS
AP Sports Writer

DALLAS — Dallas Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk says the team will recognize right away that new coach Marc Crawford is the “guy in charge.”

Crawford was introduced Thursday as the replacement for Dave Tippett, who was fired on Wednesday.
The coaching change is the first significant move made by Nieuwendyk since he was hired May 31. He says he felt the team needed a change in leadership, and that Crawford has the qualities he wanted in a new coach.
Nieuwendyk, who played for Crawford on Team Canada in the 1998 Olympics, lauded Crawford’s wealth of experience. He has coached the 15th-most games in NHL history at 987 and won the Stanley Cup with Colorado in 1996.
